The Town of Stratford is located immediately to the southeast of the City of Charlottetown, the provincial capital and largest municipality in Prince Edward Island. The Stratford area was founded in the 1750's when several Acadian families settled in the Bunbury area, and following acceptance of the Royal Commission on the Land's recommendations by the Provincial Government, the Town of Stratford was created on April 1, 1995.

The word Stratford means "Road Over Water".

The Town of Stratford is made up of five communities (Bunbury, Southport, Cross Roads, Keppoch-Kinlock, and Battery Point). The five communities are also represented by the
budding branches towards the bottom of the crest. The five sets of buds, one at the top and four along the sides, were chosen as they represent the birth and growth of a new town.

The
